Be Like Bailey
I have a dog named Bailey. Bailey depends on me for food, water and exercise each morning and evening. He looks to me for praise, for play, and for belly rubs when he wants attention. In our home we call that gettin’ some lovin’. Where I am, Bailey is, unless he sneaked off to do something he absolutely has no business doing.
When I call his name, he comes.
At times Bailey is so close that a sudden change in my direction causes me to trip over him. Bailey is lockstep with me, his master. Your dog may be similar.
A popular phrase of Evangelical Christians in the 90’s proclaimed, “What would Jesus do?” Bracelets were worn with the abbreviation WWJD as a constant reminder that as Christians our daily actions should show the love of Christ to others. We should be like Jesus. What would Jesus do?
Jesus would befriend the unpopular and the outcasts.
Jesus would endure an undeserved beating.
Jesus would be berated by church leaders and remain silent.
Jesus would be spat on and cursed.
Jesus would eat dinner with a backstabber and still call him friend.
Jesus did all of that, but can I? Being like Jesus is much too lofty a goal for me, but I can be like Bailey. Bailey is a present daily reminder and example of what it means to be lockstep with the Master. He reminds me of what it means to depend on Him for everything — food, clothing, shelter, and even some lovin’.
Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. Matthew 6:33-34 MSG
Bailey reminds us of our need to be lockstep with the Master. We are called to be like Jesus, which can be daunting, but instead, we can strive to be like Bailey and depend on the Lord for everything. We should focus our attention on what God is doing in our lives, and trust that He will help us deal with the hard times.
Like Bailey, I want to be so in tune with the Lord that I look to Him for my needs, my desires, and just a whisper commands my attention.
