Your ‘But’ Delays Your Blessings

Faith||August 4, 2025|

Greetings, my fellow travelers.

Please take a few minutes and think back to when you were a child and began asking your parents questions about everything. You know the age all parents cannot wait for their children to get to. But when they get there, they wish they could return the child to his/her not talking stage.

Come on; you know the age where you asked your parents every question your little heart could imagine, from “why is the sky blue”to “where do babies come from?” Go ahead and laugh. But, I want you to stop and think back. I know for me, when I think about that time and the types and number of questions I asked, I’m surprised my parents made it through.

As you continued to grow and ask more questions, the nature, tone, and types of questions may not have changed, but our response to the answers received began to change. We no longer took what the adult we were asking the questions of had to say as gospel and law. We began to use a three-letter word that, if we are honest, drives every adult crazy. Go ahead and say it with me, “BUT.” Ahh, you know it. You know the word. I even venture to say I have used it a time or two over the years.

I have just started reading a book by Maurice Martin entitled, Your BUT is Too Big: 7 Principles that Empower You to Heal Past Hurts and Get Motivated to Find Purpose (there’s that word again). When Maurice gave me the book and I read the title, I laughed on the inside because it would be rude to laugh in the author’s face at the title he so carefully chose.

However, after I stopped laughing, I thought about how many times, as an adult and not with a curious child’s mind, I have “butted” God? If I am honest, I have done this more often than I care to admit. I have butted God when I allowed doubt and fear to creep in; when I was disobedient, and I, leaning to my own understanding, went right when He told me to go left, or simply not believing what He told me. I could go on, but you get the jist. Here’s my question for you today: Why the “Butt”?

Here’s the challenge for you today. Stop “butting” God. Here’s why. Your “but” delays your blessings. Your but delays the provisions He has made for you and even delays you walking in peace and in your purpose. So, let today be the day you stop “butting” God.
