Scarcity vs. Abundance Mindset

Faith||August 11, 2025|

“We are reborn into a perfect inheritance that can never perish, never be defiled, and never diminish. It is promised and preserved forever in the heavenly realm for you!” 1 Peter 1:4

I stood at the edge of the water looking at the horizon as Coach Kevin reminded me that everything is mine for the taking as far as my eye could see and beyond that. “This is my world and you are just in it.” He had me repeat this over and over until I believed it.

That’s the trick of the horizon, isn’t it? It gives the illusion that there is an end to what we see but the reality is the horizon is ever-moving and its expanse is ours for the taking. This is your world, and everyone else is just in it. Say that again. Look in the mirror and say it or look outside and say it until you believe it.  Does your thought pattern reflect that truth or does it reflect the opposite? If I am being honest with myself, I have to admit my thoughts are often the latter.

I’ll often catch myself thinking things like, “there are no good men left out there”, or, “all the good paying jobs are taken”, or even “I only need $____ to survive on”. You could insert any number of small-minded and borderline negative thoughts into that line of thinking and you’ll have prime real estate for a scarcity mindset.

As women, we often downplay our needs and wants in an effort to play small, not take up too much space, and ultimately not claim the inheritance that is rightfully ours. If we truly believe we are heirs to the throne and daughters of the One True King, we would live into the truth that it is all ours and all the goodness and abundance are meant for us. We would live in an abundance mindset. Why settle for what we need to merely survive instead of what we could thrive on?

There are 8 billion people in the world, and half of them are men. So it’s safe to say there are several “good men” in that 4 billion right? And do we need all the good men or just ONE good man each? Yeah, see what I mean? Our thoughts, if not taken captive, will lead us to believe we are all in dire straights out here wandering alone in the wilderness when in fact we are very much living in the land of plenty. This world is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but we serve a living God who loves each of us as his children and wants for us the very best this side of heaven while we are here.

Let’s grab hold of the abundance awaiting us as our God-given inheritance. Catch the thoughts of scarcity when they creep in, call them out, and break them off by audibly replacing them with the truth of abundance.

In her book, “Radical Self Acceptance”,  Tara Brach teaches us to invite all thoughts in, call them by name, and bid them adieu. She cautions against attempting to ignore negative thoughts for they won’t simply go away, they will often lurk around and pop up at the most inopportune time.  A simple, “hello doubt, I see you, goodbye now” feels awkward at first but will release the yuck and get you back on track to believing in abundance.

Take hold of God’s truth. Hear Him saying to you, “look daughter, this is all yours. Take what you will”.
