Deer almost hidden in greenery

When Joy Wanders In

Faith||November 24, 2025|

We’ve spotted her three times now on our security camera.
A deer. Graceful, quiet, slipping through our yard like she’s on a mission.
And once, we think, we saw a baby.

Now I find myself watching the footage with curiosity.
What’s drawing her here?
What is she eating?
Is she looking for food for her little one?

I thought about leaving out food or water.
But my husband—wise in all things outdoors—reminded me that where deer go, snakes, rabbits, badgers, and even armadillos might follow. So instead of inviting the whole forest to dinner, I paused.

And in that pause, I realized:

Maybe I don’t need to do anything.
Maybe this is a moment to simply notice.

She comes and goes quietly.
Unbothered.
Unhurried.
Not asking for anything.
Just being.

And even though I haven’t seen her in person, her visits have become a reminder. Joy isn’t always loud. It doesn’t always arrive with music playing or fireworks in the sky.

Sometimes joy tiptoes in while we’re busy doing dishes.
Or rushing out the door.
Sometimes joy shows up on a security camera at 6:37 AM.

Be still, and know that I am God.
— Psalm 46:10

That stillness isn’t always easy to find.
But it’s here, waiting for us.
And if we slow down long enough, we might just catch a glimpse of it wandering through the yard.

So here’s to the quiet visitors.
The unexpected moments.
The kind of joy that doesn’t announce itself but still finds a way in.

Let’s keep our eyes open. You never know what might show up when you pause long enough to see it.

Joy: graceful, quiet, and already slipping through the yard.

Let’s keep the conversation going. Where has unexpected joy found you?

And if your answer is “…ummm?” Don’t worry. Joy jars are an easy (and kind of fun) way to start noticing.

One small moment at a time.
